About me

“Rebecca Rose is a Nova Scotian queer femme writer, activist, and author of two books: Before the Parade: A History of Halifax’s Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Communities (1972-1984) and Amazing 2SLGBTQIA+ People in Atlantic Canada. She holds a Journalism degree from Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) and has written and edited for various publications.

A sought after speaker, Rebecca has brought important stories of 2SLGBTQIA+ history, activism, and community to schools, libraries, community centres, churches, literary festivals, Pride celebrations and more. And many, many rallies and marches! Having spent most of the last decade researching, writing about, and sharing Nova Scotia’s Queer & Trans history, Rebecca offers a unique and engaging window into this crucial & under-told part of our past. She has addressed crowds that include youth through to seniors in locations ranging from large cities to small rural communities.

Rebecca has in-depth knowledge of and experience with student unions and universities, labour unions, non-profits, big P politics, sexual violence and support for survivors, and gender & sexual diversity.

Born in Cape Breton, Rebecca now lives in the hills of Dartmouth (as lesbians are wont to do) with her wife, child, and cat.”
